The Iowa Private Well Program is an initiative of the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa. SHL is Iowa’s environmental and public health laboratory, and the principle water testing laboratory for the state.
The goal of the Iowa Private Well Program is to help Iowans ensure that their water is safe to drink. Through its ongoing Iowa Well Survey, the program partners with counties to study existing and emerging contaminants in water from private wells.
Water quality testing for homeowners, municipalities and businesses is conducted at SHL’s laboratories in Coralville, Ankeny and Milford (Lakeside Lab).
The State Hygienic Laboratory serves all of Iowa’s 99 counties through environmental monitoring, disease detection, and newborn and maternal screening.
